Giraffe Bio raises $6.4m Seed to scale bioengineered copper reagents

The Buenos Aires and Santiago biotech secured backing from BHP Ventures and Orion Industrial Ventures to advance AI-designed flotation reagents for copper mining.

Giraffe Bio has closed a $6.4 million Seed round to validate and scale its platform of programmable biochemical reagents designed to improve copper recovery in flotation circuits. The round was led by Orion Industrial Ventures, with participation from BHP Ventures, Twynam, Air Capital, Baruch Future Ventures, and prior backer SOSV.

The company, founded in 2024 and operating across Argentina and Chile, is applying techniques drawn from drug discovery to mineral processing: AI-enabled molecular design, cell-free biology, and testing on real ore samples. The resulting reagents are designed to slot into existing flotation infrastructure as drop-in additions alongside conventional chemistry, without requiring equipment changes or the introduction of living organisms into mine operations.

The problem Giraffe is solving

Flotation underpins roughly 80% of global copper production, yet the chemical reagents used in the process have changed little since their development decades ago. As high-grade deposits are depleted, miners are increasingly processing lower-grade and more complex ores, putting pressure on recovery rates and concentrate quality. Giraffe Bio's position is that molecular design can engineer reagents tailored to specific ore mineralogy, offering operators a lever that conventional chemistry cannot.

Chief executive and co-founder Alejandro Buffo Sempe framed the opportunity plainly: "We are applying modern biology and molecular design to engineer better reagents for existing flotation circuits. Our aim is to give operators a new lever to recover more value from the ore they already process, without requiring new infrastructure."

Separately, Giraffe Bio was selected as the first Latin American company to join Breakthrough Energy's Fellows Programme, which provides funding, technical mentorship, and access to a global network of energy-transition experts. The recognition places Giraffe alongside a cohort of deep-tech founders backed by Bill Gates's climate-focused initiative and adds non-dilutive support to the Seed financing.

Market context and competitive landscape

Copper demand is structurally supported by the global energy transition: electrification, renewable generation capacity and EV manufacturing all require substantial quantities of the metal. The International Energy Agency and others have flagged a projected supply gap over the coming decade, which makes incremental improvements in mine-site recovery economically significant even before environmental benefits are accounted for.

Giraffe Bio operates in an emerging niche that might broadly be described as bio-inspired mineral processing. A small number of university spinouts and early-stage ventures are pursuing similar approaches, including the use of synthetic biology and engineered proteins to modify surface chemistry in flotation cells. The field remains pre-commercial, and industrial-scale validation is the critical next hurdle for all participants. BHP Ventures' involvement is notable: the mining major has both the ore diversity and the operational scale to accelerate pilot programmes in ways that purely financial investors cannot. The proceeds from this round will fund manufacturing scale-up, expanded pilot programmes, and growth of Giraffe's technical and commercial teams. Investors and mining partners will be watching closely for data from those larger-scale pilots as the key proof point that the platform can perform outside controlled laboratory conditions.
