CG Oncology names Isabel Kalofonos as Chief Commercial Officer
CG Oncology has appointed Isabel Kalofonos as Chief Commercial Officer, bringing in a biopharmaceutical executive with more than two decades of launch experience as the company prepares for a potential first commercial product.
Kalofonos joins from Crinetics Pharmaceuticals, which was acquired by Vertex Pharmaceuticals, where she served as CCO and helped drive the launch of PALSONIFY (paltusotine). Before Crinetics, she held the same title at ImmunoGen, where she led the commercial debut of ELAHERE (mirvetuximab soravtansine) in ovarian cancer. Earlier roles included Senior Vice President and Global Head of the Prescription Business Unit at Galderma and Vice President of the Hereditary Angioedema Franchise at Takeda, where she oversaw the global launch of TAKHZYRO (lanadelumab-flyo) across what the company described as a multi-billion-dollar business.
The commercial case for cretostimogene
CG Oncology's lead asset, cretostimogene grenadenorepvec, is an intravesically delivered oncolytic immunotherapy in late-stage development for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer. The programme spans two Phase 3 trials: BOND-003, targeting high-risk BCG-unresponsive NMIBC, and PIVOT-006, targeting intermediate-risk NMIBC. A Phase 2 study, CORE-008, is also running in high-risk NMIBC. The candidate holds FDA Fast Track and Breakthrough Therapy designations, the latter of which can accelerate the review timeline and facilitate more frequent agency interaction. CG Oncology has also opened an expanded access programme in North America for BCG-unresponsive patients who meet eligibility criteria.
Chief executive Arthur Kuan said the hire reflects deliberate investment in commercial infrastructure ahead of a potential launch, adding that Kalofonos brings "an outstanding track record of commercial execution across multiple therapeutic areas and stages of growth."
Kalofonos said the unmet need remaining in bladder cancer and the clinical data generated to date made the opportunity compelling.
Market landscape and competitive positioning
The NMIBC market is in a period of meaningful change. BCG, the long-standing standard of care, has faced persistent supply shortages, and the BCG-unresponsive segment in particular has attracted substantial drug development attention. Pembrolizumab received FDA approval in BCG-unresponsive NMIBC in 2020, establishing a checkpoint inhibitor precedent in the space, and several additional intravesical and systemic approaches are in clinical development. Cretostimogene's intravesical oncolytic mechanism is differentiated from checkpoint inhibition, and its Breakthrough Therapy designation suggests the FDA has seen preliminary evidence of meaningful advantage over available therapy.
The appointment of an experienced CCO at this stage is consistent with how mid-cap biotechs typically build out ahead of a first approval. Kalofonos's track record spans rare disease, oncology, and immunology, categories that collectively map well onto the regulatory and market access dynamics CG Oncology will face. Investors will be monitoring the Phase 3 BOND-003 readout as the most immediate binary catalyst; the timing of that readout and any subsequent BLA submission will determine whether her commercial infrastructure can be in place before a potential approval decision.
