Biomerica posts Q1 FY2027 results as InFoods IBS Medicare orders surge
Biomerica (NASDAQ: BMRA) has reported financial results for the first quarter of fiscal 2027, ended 31 August 2026, revealing a narrowing commercial picture for its flagship InFoods IBS diagnostic even as headline revenues slipped slightly year on year. Net sales fell to approximately $1.3 million from $1.4 million in the same quarter a year earlier, while gross margin compressed sharply to 8% from 31%, reflecting an unfavourable product mix and lower volumes.
The more closely watched metric for investors was the trajectory of InFoods IBS through the Medicare channel. The company said that Medicare-related test orders rose 120% in September 2026 to 22, up from 10 in August, the highest monthly figure recorded to date. As of 15 October, 32 customer locations were set up for Medicare ordering, up from 25 at the quarter-end, with 13 having placed orders, nine of them placing multiple orders. The company also confirmed that 100% of initial valid Medicare claims processed to date have been reimbursed at the full CMS Clinical Laboratory Fee Schedule rate of $300 per test, under the applicable CPT Proprietary Laboratory Analyses code.
Strategic review and financing
In August 2026, Biomerica completed a private placement of approximately 1.39 million shares at $1.60 per share, raising gross proceeds of around $2.23 million. The placing, which carried no warrants or discounted securities, was supported by B. Riley Principal Capital and all members of the board of directors. Cash and cash equivalents more than doubled to $2.7 million at 31 August from $1.3 million at 31 May, primarily on the back of those proceeds.
Alongside the financing, the company has engaged B. Riley Securities as exclusive financial adviser to support a board-level evaluation of potential strategic opportunities, including partnerships and business combinations. Biomerica was careful to note that there is no assurance this process will result in any transaction.
The company is also progressing a contract development and manufacturing agreement with an undisclosed life sciences partner, under a Master Services Agreement with initial target development fees exceeding $1.75 million, subject to additional Statements of Work. Separately, over-the-counter sales grew approximately 81% year on year to $291,000, driven by a new customer, and Middle East revenues rose around 59%.
Market context and competitive landscape
The diagnostics market for irritable bowel syndrome-related testing remains fragmented and commercially challenging. IBS affects an estimated 10-15% of the global adult population, yet objective biomarker-based testing has historically struggled to gain traction against symptom-based clinical criteria such as the Rome IV framework. Biomerica's food-immunoreactivity approach, validated in studies conducted at centres including the Mayo Clinic and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, occupies a differentiated niche, but its commercial uptake depends heavily on physician education and sustained Medicare reimbursement.
A number of smaller diagnostics companies and university-spinout ventures are pursuing gut-microbiome and food-sensitivity panels aimed at similar patient populations, meaning the window for Biomerica to establish clinical habit and reimbursement inertia is not indefinite. The strategic review, read alongside the B. Riley engagement, suggests the board may be weighing whether the company's assets are better developed inside a larger platform. Total operating expenses fell 14% year on year to $1.3 million, reflecting cost discipline that has extended the runway, but the operating loss widened to $1.2 million from $1.1 million as the gross profit decline outpaced savings.
The next meaningful milestones will be October and November Medicare order volumes, the pace of new physician on-boarding, and any announcement arising from the strategic evaluation process.
