ProKidney to present eight rilparencel abstracts at ASN Kidney Week 2026
ProKidney Corp. will present eight abstracts at the American Society of Nephrology's Kidney Week 2026 in Denver, Colorado, including one oral presentation, covering both the translational science underpinning its lead candidate rilparencel and a new pooled analysis of Phase 2 clinical data in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) and type 2 diabetes.
The oral presentation, scheduled for 23 October, details a graft-adjacent remodelling response and preserved vascular integrity observed in an immunocompromised rat CKD model treated with rilparencel. The seven poster presentations span drug product characterisation, manufacturing biology, and two novel CKD tissue model systems designed to study cell therapy responses ex vivo.
Mechanistic picture takes shape
Seven of the eight abstracts address non-clinical questions, collectively building what the company describes as a multifactorial mechanism of action. The data reportedly point to attenuation of oxidative damage, metabolic dysregulation, and pro-inflammatory signalling, alongside support for vascular and tubular repair. One abstract focuses on GPX4-associated cytoprotective activity, a pathway linked to ferroptosis resistance, while two others characterise the transcriptional and secretome changes rilparencel undergoes during manufacturing.
Bruce Culleton, chief executive of ProKidney, said the converging non-clinical evidence "coupled with the stabilization of kidney function observed across our recent Phase 2 studies in patients with advanced CKD and type 2 diabetes further strengthen our confidence in the ongoing Phase 3 PROACT 1 study."
The sole clinical abstract presents a pooled Phase 2 analysis restricted to patients who meet key PROACT 1 Phase 3 inclusion criteria. ProKidney says the subset analysis continues to indicate a strong safety profile and kidney function stabilisation, though underlying figures, including eGFR slope data and confidence intervals, were not released in the announcement. Full results are expected to be available via the ASN abstract portal and the company's website following the event.
Phase 3 and competitive context
Rilparencel, also known as REACT, holds FDA Regenerative Medicine Advanced Therapy (RMAT) designation and is under evaluation in the Phase 3 REGEN-006 (PROACT 1) study. ProKidney has indicated it views eGFR slope as a potential surrogate endpoint for an accelerated approval pathway, a regulatory strategy that will require FDA alignment and carries execution risk given the agency's evolving posture on surrogate endpoints in non-oncology settings.
CKD affects an estimated 10% of the global population and remains substantially underserved by disease-modifying therapies. The commercial landscape has shifted considerably in recent years with the approval of SGLT2 inhibitors and the entry of GLP-1 receptor agonists into nephrology indications, raising the bar for any new entrant to demonstrate additive benefit. Rilparencel's autologous cell therapy approach is mechanistically distinct from these small-molecule classes, but the complexity and cost of autologous manufacturing present their own commercial hurdles that ProKidney will need to address as it approaches a potential BLA submission.
The company has previously disclosed that its current cash position is expected to support operating plans into mid-2027, making the Phase 3 data readout timeline a critical variable for future financing options. Investors attending or watching Kidney Week will be scrutinising the pooled Phase 2 subset data for any signal on eGFR trajectory that might de-risk the ongoing pivotal study.
